Designing My Dream Home: A Personal Journey into Interior Design

Designing My Dream Home: A Personal Journey into Interior Design

Since I was 4, I dreamed of living in a self-designed home. Growing up in a joint family, it was pretty hard to find an appropriate living space. Though the making of our now sweet home was a 2 years lengthy process, I enjoyed and learned from every bit of this experience.

People usually find a reliable interior designing company and handover the whole project to them. But my father trusted my vision and let me handle the whole thing with full freedom and authority.  I wanted to make a blank canvas to a dream abode with my own creativity. So, I decided to assign an interior architect who helped me to guide through this journey while I had my full interference in this whole project.

Initially, the architect in charge, provided me a 3D layout of the whole house. And that is where my work began. I took the draft as my guideline and started looking for materials with the help of the interior architect who provided me the sources of standard quality products and measurements. I had a minimalistic and soothing theme in my mind for the interior. At first, I went to find tiles and marbles for the house. It took me more than 2 weeks to find the tiles only. I wanted the stairs of the duplex to be made of marbles. I chose shades of whites and off-whites for my tiles and marbles. After the whole house was tiled and I could see the primary outcome, I decided to add some contrast to this monochromatic look of the house. I went for some neutral cool-toned gray marbles for the dining table, the dining countertops and the dining sink. I tired playing with varieties of marbles making sure I maintained a certain color palette for the whole house.

After the house was done with the part including marbles and the tiles, it was time for choosing the sanitary products. There are different types of sinks you will find in the market. I wanted something unique and different. So, I decided to custom make the sinks for each washroom. I chose warm-toned marbles for the sinks and provided the workers the design I wanted. And satisfactorily enough, the sinks turned out to be unique to the eyes of every person who visited my home till now.

One of the most crucial parts was designing the kitchen. While having a big family has its own perks, arranging get togethers frequently can be a chaos. To prevent a mess, I decided to make a big kitchen situated in a complete separate corner of the house where all the heavy and large quantity of cooking can be done. To add a modern and more welcoming touch, decided to have an open kitchen on the 2nd floor of the duplex which consists of a bar area that would serve snacks and juices to the guests.

After all of these were done, it was time for choosing the wall colors and the furniture. As I said, I have a huge family including elders like my grandparents and a lot of kids as well, I had to keep their needs and tastes particularly in mind to craft their rooms. I chose the wall-colors consisting of different shades of pastels, beige, off white and brown. I handpicked each and every furniture myself to match the theme of the house. I faced quite some challenges in this regard. Unfortunately, even after searching day and night, I didn’t find those kinds of furniture I was looking for. So, I had to work with usual wooden featured modern furniture. In order to make sure the wooden touch of the furniture would not look mismatched with all the marble details, I decided to do some unique design in the staircase walls of the duplex with some boards, add some modern minimalist chandeliers and add lights of various warmth in different places of the house. The incorporations synchronized the marble details with the wooden furniture and accentuated the house further.

As my family is quite chaotic as it is, I wanted to make sure anyone who enters my home will feel an instant sense of peace and tranquility. As I step back and take the finished space, I realize that designing my dream home wasn’t just about the aesthetics, but about crafting a space that truly reflects who I am— a journey that inspires me every day.
